Launching of Awareness Tools from the Ozone Office
2 May - 5 June 2004

The need to raise awareness about ozone protection remains one of the biggest challenges in ozone protection for numerous reasons, including changing the behavior of citizens to avoid the use of ozone depleting products, encouraging business owners to adopt ozone friendly technology, mobilizing political support for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol at the national level, and encouraging actions by industry that sustain the phase out successes already achieved. Each year an awareness project is assigned to one country in the West Asia Region (that proposes the most attractive type of campaign). Accordingly, the United Nations Environment Programme / Regional Office for West Asia Countries (UNEP/ROWA) allocated an amount of US$ 24,000 for regional awareness project for 2003 with the collaboration of the Ozone Office in Lebanon. As an outcome of the 2003 Regional Follow-up Meeting of ODS Officers of West Asia Network, held in Damascus, Syria in December 2003 – Lebanon won the competition and two of it’s proposals were selected for the 2003 Regional Awareness Projects, i.e. a Teachers Guide in a Booklet and CD-ROM format designed by International Development Centre (IDC) and a Children’s Book designed by Tamyras. Under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Fares Bouez – Minister of Environment, the Ministry of Environment organized in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme / the Regional Office for West Asia Countries (UNEP/ROWA), the 2004 Main Meeting of ODS Officers for West Asia Network from 2nd May through 5 June 2004, both awareness tools were launched and presented in this meeting.
