UN organisations present in Lebanon cover a wide range
with activities spanning from peace keeping, assistance to refugees,
humanitarian assistance to financial and technical assistance for development.
Each one of these programs is formulated and implemented in partnership with
the Government and in consultation and co-operation with Non-Governmental
Organisations, civil society and the private sector, in support of national
objectives of reconstruction and development.
UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (UNDP)
UNDP assists developing countries and countries in transition to strengthen their capacities to achieve sustainable human development -focused on the human being. UNDP is the UN organisation which provides the largest source of grant technical assistance for development (US$ 1.9 Billion in 1995), and the main organ entrusted with co-ordination of development assistance provided by organisations of the UN system. It operates through a network of 134 country offices covering some 174 countries and territories.

THE UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL DRUG CONTROL PROGRAMME (UNDCP)
UNDCP was established pursuant to General Assembly Resolution
45/179 of 21 December 1990 as a single body responsible for consolidated
international action in the field of drug abuse control, with the objective of
enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the UN structure for drug abuse
control on keeping with the functions and mandate of the United Nations in the
field.

UNITED NATIONS POPULATION FUND (UNFPA)
UNFPA became operational in 1969. It is a subsidiary organ of
the UN General Assembly, with the Governing Council of the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) as its governing body.

UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES (UNHCR)
UNHCR was established by the General Assembly in 1950 to
protect refugees and promote durable solutions to their problems. UNHCR depends
entirely on voluntary contributions from Governments and private sources for
its programmes, seeking to assist as many refugees as possible.

UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION CENTRE (UNIC)
UNIC in Beirut is one of the 68 information centres and
services around the world, reporting to the United Nations Department of Public
Information (UNDPI). Further to General Assembly Resolution 13 (1) of 13
February 1946 which called on UNDPI to establish branch offices in all parts of
the world, UNIC Beirut was established on 7 September 1962.

UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN FUND (UNICEF)
UNICEF which was created by the General Assembly in 1946 and
started its activities in 1948, is unique among organisations working for
long-term, sustainable human development, owing to its universal mandate for
the survival, protection and development of children.

UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT FUND FOR WOMEN (UNIFEM)
UNIFEM was created in 1976 as The Voluntary Fund for United
Nations Decade for Women. Based in New York and with 11 Regional Offices, in
Western Asia in Amman, the fund became an autonomous organisation in
association with UNDP in 1985. Financial support for UNIFEM comes from UN
member states along with contributions from UNIFEM's 17 National Committees,
Women's Organisations, Foundations, Corporations, and Individuals.

WFP is the largest source of food in development assistance
within the UN system. Established as joint undertaking by the UN and Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 1963, the programme's main objective is to
provide food to support development activities and to provide emergency food
aid in times of crisis. Although WFP is primarily an operational organisation,
it also assists in the formulation and improvement of food aid policies and
programmes. Funding for WFP programmes is provided through regular
contributions from donor countries, from the Food Aid Convention and from the
International Emergency Food Reserve.

THE UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES IN THE NEAR
EAST (UNRWA)
UNRWA was established by the General Assembly in 1949 and
became operational in May 1950. UNRWAS's operations are supervised and
supported by its Headquarters in Gaza. Ten member states are represented in its
Advisory Commission. In addition to its international staff, UNRWA employs
nearly 20500 local staff, mainly Palestine Refugees.

FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO)
FAO was founded in October 1945, and is governed by an interim governing body composed of 49 Member Nations.

UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION (UNIDO)
UNIDO was established in 1966 to act as the central
coordinating body for industrial activities within the UN system as well as to
promote industrial development and cooperation at global, regional, national
and sectoral levels.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO)
WHO is a specialized agency in the United Nations and was
established in 1948 by 61 Governments "For the purpose of cooperation
among themselves and with others to promote the health of all people". The
number of member states has grown to 190. WHO maintains official relationships
with more than 184 International Non-Governmental Organisations. WHO
collaborates also with a network of National Research Centres and Scientific
Institutions to pursue international goals and support WHO programmes at all
levels.

UNITED NATIONS INTERIM FORCE IN LEBANON (UNIFIL)
UNIFIL is one of the peace-keeping forces deployed by the
United Nations. In March 1978, after Israeli forces invaded Southern Lebanon
following a Palestinian commando raid in Israel, The Security Council called on
Israel to cease its military action against Lebanon's territorial integrity and
established the UNIFIL.

INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY (IAEA)
IAEA came into existence in 1957. It is an autonomous
international organization under the UN aegis. IAEA's policies and programmes
are directed by the General Conference composed of all IAEA's member states,
and by 35-member Board of Governors.

INTERNATIONAL LABOR ORGANIZATION (ILO)
ILO was created by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. its
creation gave expression to the concern for social reform that grew with the
labour implications of the war and subsequent industrial development, and the
conviction that realistic reform had to be conducted at the international
level.

UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL EDUCATION (UNESCO)
UNESCO came into being in 1946. The General Conference of
UNESCO is composed of representatives of 183 member states that decides on the
policy, programme, and budget of the organization. The Executive Board is
responsible for supervising the programme adopted by the Conference.
