*Nature Conservation
My name is Finn McLennan-Elliott and I live in New Zealand. I am involved in the Tiritiri Matangi Island Sanctuary, in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city. This is a community based open sanctuary for endangered New Zealand birds. There are about 1600 supporters and 150 of these are active volunteers. I'm probably the youngest.
The mission of Tiritiri is to protect NZ's endangered bird species from becoming extinct. New Zealand has the worlds largest number of critically endangered birds. The Kakapo, the worlds largest parrot, has only 86!!! remaining. The New Zealand fairy tern has only 30 remaining!!!!!!!! There are board walks around the island, and volunteers guide people through these tracks and
inform them about the birds and trees on the island.
The volunteers produce a newsletter which goes out to all the supporters to inform them about recent events and future events on the island and how the birds are progressing.
I would like to exchange information with kids who are involved with projects in other countries which are working with wildlife conservation. What work is being done to save endangered species in other countries?
The children's world summit has shown me that there are kids all over the world who are working with endangered species just like me. I enjoyed talking to these kids and learning what they are doing. The conference gave me the opportunity to meet kids from 65 different countries which I wouldn't have otherwise had. I am now learning French at school and hope to learn Spanish when I get the chance so that I can speak to people who don't speak english and are involved in the environment.
