Our local river, Ookagawa, flows through Yokohama City from head to mouth. Our group consist of the local Girl Scout members, and we conduct surveys on the water, creatures and plants around the area. Recently, we have been focusing on tree planting and grass mowing near the head of the river, while observing the nature and enjoying our activities.
We have been keeping track of the river for over fifteen years. Our survey takes place every summer. We hope to learn ways to get along with the river utilizing our past observations and records.
We believe that it is essential for each of us to know well about our place, think how we can protect the nature surrounding us, and to take action in order to fulfill our objectives. At the same time, adults are advised to think how they ought to give support to the children.
We publish our annual activity report in the Yokohama River Forum.
We would like to exchange and share information with other children of similar age group who continue to work for their ecology groups.
Our activities take place in the forests. We plant trees, take care and observe them. Please share your forest-based experience with us.
I realized through participating in the Children's World Summit for the Environment that there are a number of children around the globe who are engaged in environmental activities just like us. I would like to keep on being involved with the Girl Scout and ecology club activities. I hope to work as one of the staff in the future, and strongly desire to be able to speak English by then.
